The Hermit

Today’s episode brings us to the number nine card or the hermit. The usual symbology is of a man in a hooded robe standing alone on the tops of a mountain.  He has a lantern on his staff or in his hand. He is a presented as someone who is secreted himself a way from the rest of society. He is in search of wisdom which is what the lantern is for. He is using the lantern to find wisdom and enlightenment in the darkness, he’s almost always presented This way in most decks. 

Another possibility is that he has come out of his seclusion to spread enlightenment and wisdom to those that will follow him. Either can be true but the point is; you need to ask why is this person here on the mountaintop. Is he leaving or is he searching? Is he going to spread his wisdom or is he going to back for more wisdom? Is he just looking for himself? There are many possibilities, so if he faces work related issues, is he leading the work group or just in it for himself. Which is one of the shadow positions meanings of the hermit card.  He is being greedy and keeping all of the wisdom to himself not willing to share or get differing opinions.  He gets very selective as to whom he will share his knowledge and wisdom.  Which is not the point of knowledge, wisdom and ideas; it is to share with as many people that will accept what he has to convey.  

Hang onto information and may go back for more may well be a sign of a lack of self confidence. At some point you have to stop searching and start doing/teaching. Stop getting ready and just start doing.

The question to ask for the hermit card is are you withdrawing yourself for some reason or are you just too shy?  Are you depressed or has anxiety prevented you from connecting with others.  Are you being just nasty and selfish and stingy with people. Are you confused about which direction you really going and you need the lantern for enlightenment?  Or are you seeking help from a friend or reader like myself? And the most important question is are you going to answer the call to higher service and become a beacon for others are you going to become the teacher? Are you going to accept the responsibility? Or are you just the sit on the mountain and be miserable? These are basically your two  choices that you have with hermit card. There are of course always different shades of meaning different understanding and enlightenment and is slightly different each client depending on weither it is a work relationships, a love relationship or a relationship with an institution or a bank or some other kind of difficult to navigate institution. There are many more interpretations and shades of meaning.
